"Stranger" continues shooting despite Thai floods

"A Stranger in Paradise" stars Stuart Townsend.

Hollywood independent film “A Stranger in Paradise”, executive produced and line produced in Thailand by Benetone Films, bravely charged ahead with filming in locations around Bangkok, despite floodwaters from the north approaching the inner capital in October and November.

On November 5, the production team was shooting a complex action scene that involved actors jumping from a bridge onto a moving canal boat in Banglamphoo district, even as the flood was hardly one kilometer away on the Thonburi side of the city across Pinklao bridge. Everyone involved in the production, from the Thai crew to the US crew as well as the actors, was 100% focused on the task at hand and got the shots they needed. The atmosphere on the set was relaxed but professional, with star Colin Egglesfield buying Thai popsicles for the entire unit to help with the stifling heat.

“Some people were nervous about shooting in Thailand because of the flood issue,” said Benetone Films producer Kulthep Narula. “But everyone loved the script and knew that it had to be shot here. Certain locations weren't accessible so we had to go with alternate plans, but everyone involved was extremely cooperative and we are managing to get what we want for the film.”

A Stranger in Paradise is Benetone's first foray into Hollywood filmmaking after years of producing successful Bollywood films and international TV commercials. “This is the first Hollywood film that we are investing in. It's a nice little project, small independent film. We managed to secure some great cast. The films is looking fantastic. We have a sales company attached to the film and they've started marketing it to the American Film Market in Los Angeles. We've been getting some good response and we're all very excited.”

A Stranger in Paradise stars Colin Egglesfield (Something Borrowed, Beautiful Dreamer), Stuart Townsend (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Chaos Theory), Catalina Sandino Moreno (Oscar-nominated for Maria Full of Grace, Fast Food Nation), Byron Mann (Red Corner, Catwoman), and Gary Daniels. Thai casts includes some A list actors Sonia Couling, Tui Teerapat and Moo Somphob.

The feature is written and directed by Jay Boccia, and produced by 24/7 and Hillin Entertainment. It is executive produced by Benetone Films and Marengo Films, line produced by Benetone Films, and Cinema Management Group (CMG) is the worldwide sales agent.

Benetone Films is producing its first Hollywood movie "Stranger in Paradise", starring Stuart Townsend, Colin Egglesfield, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Byron Mann, and Gary Daniels!

Benetone Films is the largest production company in Thailand. After working on over 60 feature films and 350 TV commercials, Benetone is leveraging its extensive experience in Thailand to venture into executive producing its first Hollywood feature film. Rachvin and Kulthep Narula of Benetone Films count Bollywood smash hit "Ready", starring mega-star Salman Khan, and "Luck", starring Sanjay Dutt, amongst their many credits produced in Thailand.

Beverly Hills-based international sales company Cinema Management Group (CMG) acquired worldwide rights for the feature thriller Stranger in Paradise and principal photography is happening in Thailand with Benetone Films overseeing the project.

The plot's this: On the verge of becoming a partner at a multibillion-dollar hedge fund, Josh Pratt’s life takes a drastic turn when the SEC launches an investigation against the head of the company for insider trading. Forced into a “vacation” he never asked for, Josh finds himself in Bangkok with a price on his head and a morally ambiguous older brother who is knee deep in the Thai mafia. Josh’s only chance of escape is to give up information he doesn’t even know he has.

Here's a press release from the UN about a Human Rights Day commercial we produced recently. We're so happy with the positive reception it received and the opportunity to support such a good cause.

On Human Rights Day, people from South-East Asia show how diversity can be a powerful voice against discrimination regardless of language barriers. “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”, says Thai Pop singer and actor Khun Kob (Songsit Rungnoppakunsi). Children, a woman, an elderly couple and a worker, lend their voice to stress the need for opportunities, dignity, respect and equality. They announce an interpretation of the first sentence of the UDHR in their own language – Thai, Lao, Tagalog, Malay and English.

The PSA was produced by Benetone Films; created by Young & Rubicam Thailand and directed by Razneesh Ghai as a contribution for Human Rights Day in collaboration with OHCHR – Regional Office for South-East Asia and UNDP Regional Center Bangkok.

Cinema Masters and Young Talent to Showcase Work in Bangkok

More than 80 international films will be screened at the 7th World Film Festival of Bangkok this year, featuring works from the European Union, Latin America, Asia and Southeast Asia. The festival aims to bring together the new and the old, the masters and apprentices, the classic and neo-experimental, and display the importance of continuity and development between the generations.

The festival is more than just film screenings, though - there are film-related talks like the Master Class Workshop, and other special events on the card as well. Probably the most unique and engaging aspect is a workshop, in co-operation with the Tri Continental Film Festival and Produire Au Sud from France, to guide film producers seeking funds for their new projects. At the end of the workshop, the most interesting film projects in Southeast Asia will be selected to receive funds and the makers will be invited to the final selection in France. COOL!

International Bollywood Musical Hits Bangkok This Month

The story begins in India, in the deserts of Rajasthan, in the temple of Shiva. Ayesha Merchant is the granddaughter of Shantilal Merchant, who choreographed dances during Bollywood cinema's golden era. The Merchant family's tradition of performing Indian classical dance, with all its precise hand, foot and eye movements, is passed on to the young Ayesha, but she is more interested in the modern dance and music of new Bollywood...

Thus the stage is set for the internationally acclaimed dance musical, The Merchants of Bollywood. Just up is our new TVC for Standard Chartered Bank Pakistan (SCB) & the Pakistan International (PIA) affinity card. This one is a stellar showcase of some of the diverse settings available for shooting films and TV commercials in Bangkok.
Being that the product is related to tourism, they decided to shoot here as Thailand is a key tourist market. Take note of the traditional floating market and beautiful night sky. A big draw for this shoot was also the fantastic art team which did a great job with the business class seat mock up.

Toonpur Ka Superhero - Coming Soon!

Scheduled for release this December is the mixed live action and animation film (think Space Jam) Toonpur Ka Superhero. We worked with Stunt Director Jack Gill (Death Race, Wild Hogs, Talladega Nights) and a US based stunt team to pull off some hectic sequences.

We got permission from the aviation department to land a helicopter in the middle of the sea on a huge (over 100 meters) barge that we had to modify to accommodate the helicopter's massive size and weight. It was the first time anyone has been given the permit allowing such a maneuver.

We rigged two barges to pull off a stunt where a jetski does a jump and complete flip over a pier.

We also shot a stunt at the Hilton Arcadia in Phuket with a huge rigging that carried a motorcycle across two buildings (over 200 meters).

It was a great shoot and we cant wait for the release of this one. Check out the official movie website here.

We just finished a TV commercial to be aired in India for Toyota's Fortuner. Benetone Films was responsible for all the rigging for the shoot. The ad aims to show the dual nature of the vehicle as efficient for the hustle and bustle of the big city and for long leisure drives through the country. We shot in 10 locations in Bangkok and Pattaya over three days.

The Most Expensive Bollywood Movie Ever Made

Deep crystal blue water and intense action scenes are the formula for the new Bollywood blockbuster hit BLUE, set to be released this Diwali weekend (October 16th). Shot on location in The Bahamas and Thailand (nice!), BLUE is the most expensive Hindi movie ever produced. For Hindi movie fans this is a long anticipated project, and with the nods it’s getting from viewers outside the traditional fan base, the movie promises to be an international mega-hit.
BLUE is the story of three friends (Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, and Zayed Khan) living in the Bahamas in search of a sunken treasure. Lara Dutta plays the character of a glamorous beach babe and Katrina Kaif makes an appearance to round out the star appeal of the film. The story is fueled by danger, deceit, and action. Lots of action: In the air, on the ground, and for the first time in an Indian film, underwater.

One of the biggest draws to this film is its “international” feel. Director Anthony D’Souza made it clear that he “tried to make a film that looks like it is from Hollywood but is in fact a 100 percent Bollywood film.” And producers spared no expense to help him, bringing in some of the best film technicians from around the world. Specialist cinematographer Pete Zuccarini (Pirates of the Caribbean, Deep Blue Sea) was brought in to capture the beauty of the ocean and underwater sequences. Fast paced action sequences – we closed roads and highways and blew up all kinds of vehicles for these shots - are guaranteed to get you wide-eyed thanks to James Bomalick (Fast and Furious – Tokyo Drift, Live Free or Die Hard).

Make-up artist Nickolette Skarlatos (Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3, The Soloist) and hair stylist Clarabelle Saldanha (Transformers) brought their expertise even adding that Lara Dutt’s look was very similar to Hollywood star Megan Fox.

To impress music fans, the Oscar winning pair of composer A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire, Elizabeth: The Golden Age) and sound engineer Resul Pookutty (Slumdog Millionaire), were brought on to compose the tracks and handle sound for the film. More publicized, however, might be mention of Australian sensation Kylie Minogue, who was brought on to sing and dance for two of the most talked about songs and became the highest paid (more than $1 million) foreign star ever in a Hindi movie for doing so.

Thailand Implements New Film Ratings System

After years of deliberation, and numerous delays, the Thai cabinet has finally passed a law which includes Thailand’s first ever film ratings system. Films released in Thailand will now receive an age-restricted certificate:

‘G’ (suitable for general audiences) -- No sex, abusive language or violence.

‘P’ (Promote) -- Movies that should be promoted on the basis of cultural or artistic merit.

‘+13’ -- No violence, brutality, inhumanity, bad language or indecent gestures.

‘+15’ -- Some violence, brutality, inhumanity, bad language or indecent gestures will be allowed.

‘+18’ -- No exposed genitalia, crime or drugs.

‘+20’ -- Sex scenes are allowed but no exposed genitalia.

Films do still run the risk of the trusty Ban from the ratings board – for movies that offend the monarchy, threaten national security, hamper national unity, insult faiths, disrespect honorable figures, challenge morals or contain explicit sex scenes – but seemingly with the new system in place this will occur less often than in the past.

The certificates are advisory (not enforced) with the exception of the ‘+20’ rating which is like the American NC-17 rating. No word yet on how entries in film festivals will be treated, or if movies that do give a peek at genitalia will be pixilated as they have been traditionally.

The issuing of the ratings comes just in time for the release of 4 movies that allow the ratings board to stretch its legs in the new scheme and allow us to get a sense of what to expect. No huge surprises here:

The ratings are required to be posted by distributors on all promotional materials and have already cropped up in many Thai film-related websites. Several newspapers are lagging in implementing the ratings in their editorials, and since the theater owners are only required to verify the ages of their patrons for a ‘+20’ rating it could take some time before the system becomes mainstream.

Before you read this article I’d like you to close your eyes and, while keeping them closed, go to the kitchen and pour yourself a glass of water... Okay. Close your eyes and go to the closet and select what you’re going to wear tomorrow... Alright. Close your eyes and go ride a motorcycle… drive a jet ski… and jump off a building.

I'll wait here.

Did you do all that? Did you remember to keep your eyes closed the entire time? Good. Now you have some idea of what it’s like to be Nasser Khan, one of our personal heroes and star of the new action film “Shadow – The Dark Side of Truth”.

See, Khan was born with cataracts and has lived his life with only 10-15% vision in his left eye, completely blind otherwise. Despite this disability though, he was top of his class until visibility became too much of a problem and he was forced to drop out (in Class VIII). He then studied electronics repair and the tannery business, and in 1995 opened his own tannery. He became increasingly interested in the IT sector and in 2000 became the first blind man to pass all four Microsoft certification courses (MCSE, MCSD, MCSA, and MCDBA) which carried him on to opening several computer centers. Next came investments in real estate, and then insurance. He's also an accomplished musician on various instruments.

He's basically Donald Trump and Stevie Wonder.
And now, he’s tackling the big screen and performing all his own stunts... which mean he's also Jackie Chan.

For “Shadow – The Dark Side of Truth” Khan co-produces, acts, sings, dances, and performs a series of incredible stunts (ahem, you heard me right the first time: without the help of a stuntman). We line produced a good portion of this film and were blown away by his story and his performance. Apparently we weren’t the only ones - his beautiful co-stars Sonali Kulkarni and Hrishita Bhatt had nothing but praises for the man who Bhatt said was “a dream person to work with."

Yes, the movie is deliberately (and overtly) being marketed for the appeal of Khan’s real life story (he is, after all, a businessman first). But no, it does not come into the actual film where the integrity of the story and the rest of the cast is well maintained. This is an intense, energetic, and novel Bollywood action film and we highly recommend you checking it out – especially the parts in Bangkok!

As visitor arrivals fall off, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is hoping lure punters back with "Old Hollywood Glamour" at the seventh Bangkok International Film Festival from September 24 to 30.

There's hope the fest will generate Bt3 billion worth of spending and deals for the film industry, officials said yesterday. "The TAT has invested Bt25 million out of Bt80 million, while the rest comes from the Federation of National Film Associations of Thailand and the private sector," says Jareuk Kaljareuk, federation president and festival director.

The theme, "Old Hollywood Glamour", means to combine the Hollywood's 1930s golden era with Thailand's of the 1960s. More than 80 features have been selected by the Thai Film Director's Association. "This year the trend for film festivals is to show serious movies and the Bangkok International Film Festival is no exception," says programming director Pimpaka Towira.

The opening and closing films were not revealed but confirmed titles include the Canadian drama "I Killed My Mother", the Cannes' Grand Prix winner "Un Prophete", the Thailand-set Swedish thriller "Mammoth" and "Burma VJ" by Danish documentarian Anders Ostergaard.
Action hero Jean-Claude Van Damme and South Korean actor Lee Byung-hun from "G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra" will be among 200 stars strutting the red carpets.

An opulent opening is set for CentralWorld while a welcoming banquet will be held on the Chao Phrya. The Golden Kinnaree Awards are set for the Dusit Thani's Chatrium Suites Bangkok.
Seminars will focus on business concerns. "We will bring foreign filmmakers and investors to share their experience with Thai filmmakers. It will portray how Thai film industry can build up the creative economy," says Asst Prof Dr Chavana Pavaganun, festival vice-director.

Benetone Films Short Selected for Thai Festival

So last year we decided to go on an experimental creative endeavor and produce our own short film. The film, "5 Minute War", is the brutal story of two young (12 year-old) brothers forced to fight each other in an illegal boxing club in order to save the life of their mother. It was met with great reviews and was even an official selection of the Pai International Film & Animation Festival 2008. Well we were thrilled, to say the least.

And now, for those of you that missed it (and are living in the Bangkok area), "5 minute war" has been selected to play at the 13th Thai Short Film Festival on Saturday Aug 22nd, at 15:00. A Bollywood Homage to Classic Kung Fu

Chandni Chowk to China is Bollywood’s first ever Kung-Fu comedy and it’s now available on DVD. Now normally we like to take some time to highlight our contributions to a project… and this time is no different, it'll come later… but there’s a lot more going on with this movie than just some amazing work on our part.

First of all, Bollywood’s never before made an attempt at breaking into the Kung Fu comedy realm (think Jackie Chan and Stephen Chow). But CC2C, which is much easier to say, incorporates the stylized comedy and superb stunt coordination with Indian themes and Bollywood choreography (think Jackie Chan and Stephen Chow dancing and singing in Hindi).

The film lucked out in getting Warner Brothers to co-produce and distribute the film in the US – WB’s first Hindi project – which helped to bring on some really big names for the project: from India is the routinely zero-to-hero star Akshay Kumar (Welcome, Singh is King) and the stunning Deepika Padukone (Bachna Ae Haseeno, Love Aaj Kal) ; from China is legendary Shaolin-style martial-arts actor Chia Hui Liu; and from the US is Hollywood actor (and real life martial artist) Roger Yuan. These actors are brought together for some beautifully coordinated fight sequences – including the first ever that the Chinese government has allowed to be shot on the Great Wall - thanks to action choreographer Huan-Chiu Ku (Fist of Fury, Romeo Must Die, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon).

Did you get all that? Point is, these are some serious martial-arts people here and the folks from Bollywood really held their own in such unfamiliar territory (click here for an article on Huan-Chiu Ku’s doubts about Kumar) and it’s worth taking a look.

Another notable fact about this movie is that a large portion of it was filmed in Thailand (you knew it was coming). The crew decided to bring the shoot to Thailand for more than half of the film thanks to the low cost of shooting and the ease of attaining production permits. Benetone Films was there to scout locations, get said permits, assist stunt coordination with proper rigging (one of the best rigging crews that Huan-Chiu Ku said he's ever worked with, thank you), and recreate an entire Chinese village.

The film was met with mixed reviews and a good deal of controversy (completely banned in Nepal by the Nepalese government) over an apparent misrepresentation of the birthplace of Buddha. Indian Cinema beats US ,UK and China

Facts and figures which surprised the whole world:

Recently European Audiovisual observatory known for its in-depth study of Film, Television, video and multimedia Industry came out with its latest report Focus 2009 on Film market trends of different countries of World. Though the whole world already knew about the combined mass production of movies across India is much higher than any other country in the world, there were certain figures revealed by the study which surprised not only the cinema goers in India but the entire world.

It was evident that being the highest populated country of World , theater admission would be more as compared to other countries, but as high as 3.29 bn, which is equivalent to the combined figure of the other top 9 producing countries of World, reflects the interest of Indians towards cinema.

Though Bollywood has been misapprehended as Indian cinema for a long time, it accounts for 22% of the total films followed by Telugu and Tamil films accounting for 21% and 13% respectively. Growth in multiplex screens which now accounts for 65% -70 % of the total Indian box office boosted the revenue graph which increased by 12% compared to last year revenues.In 2008 Indian box office reached $ 1.8 bn with average ticket price as low as 25 INR on the other hand another Asian country Japan with an average ticket price as high as 600 INR reached $1.9bn mark. Unites states on the other hand generated revenues close to $9.7bn with theater admission of 1.3 bn approximately. Average ticket price in United states is $7. Similarly United kingdom touched a whopping figure of $8.5bn with only 164 million people going to theaters in 2008. Thus Indian cinema beats other countries when it comes to no. of movies produced and theatre admission whereas lags behind in box office collection.

Every year Indian film industry bears a loss close to $ 1 bn due to piracy which is eating a big portion of revenue generated every year. Film fraternity is trying hard to curb such practices and the day it’s eradicated, Indian cinema will give tough competition to other countries in terms of net box office revenues.

"Domino's Pizza" Commercial - We just finished a really funny commercial for Domino's Pizza delivery service starring MTV India's hottest VJ, Cyrus.

Film:

"Chunnu N Mhunnu" - We're currently line producing this family film that follows a young hotel owner and his lovable chimpanzee friend as they fend off a bullying corporation that wants the little hotel for their own.

"LUCK" - Finally this highly anticipated, star-studded action film has been released and we're really excited about this one! Benetone Films headed the production of the climactic action sequence that is sure to blow you away!

Benetone Films Appointed Thailand Online Producer for Mukta's New Film

Benetone Films is proud to announce that it has been appointed the Thai Online Producer for Nagesh Kukunoor’s latest feature film Bangkok to Bombay. Under the banner of Mukta Searchlight the movie Bangkok to Bombay is a romantic comedy stars Shreyas Talpade and Thai actress Lina Christianson. First time ever that a Thai lead actress is starring in a Bollywood film.

Talking about the subject of Bombay to Bangkok, Nagesh said that he has been a frequent visitor to Thailand. "I truly enjoyed the place...this is a place I wanted to showcase in the film. I've tried to understand the Thai culture and from my research I can say that there are a lot of similarities between Indian and Thai cultures. It's Same Same...But Different." Same Same...But Different also happens to be the catch line of the film that is written in a zany manner on the film's poster that resembles an Airline Boarding Pass. The maverick director seems to be completely smitten by Thai culture and wants to showcase Thailand in a different light.

Mukta Searchlight films was launched in 2004 by the Veteran film maker Subash Ghai to encourage independent cinema and debut film-makers with low cost productions, while Mukta Arts Entertainment was launched to cater to mainstream popular cinema like last release 36 China Town and this year's release Sangeeth Sivan's Apna Sapna Money Money.

The filming starts from 15th March to 21st April in Bangkok, Kha Yai and Kho Chang. It should be an exciting schedule. Please do visit our blog for regular updates of the shoots and prodution stills.

Headlines: Bollywood trains cameras on Thailand

MUMBAI: Bollywood, ever in search of exotic locales, seems to be setting its sights on Thailand. E Niwas' De Taali and Nagesh Kukunoor's Bombay to Bangkok are two forthcoming films, which will be shot in the country.
Thailand too is keen to welcome Bollywood with open arms. In 2006, of the 450 foreign film productions produced in Thailand, 79 were from India. These included ads, music videos, short films and feature films.

In the most recent and enterprising Thailand – Bollywood connection, Mukta Searchlight Films' Bombay to Bangkok will be extensively shot in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. In fact, it was the city itself that inspired director Nagesh Kukunoor to script his film. He says, "As a frequent visitor to Thailand, I truly enjoyed the place. During my research, I found that Indians and Thais are 'same same but different' (which incidentally, is the tagline of Bombay to Bangkok). It was with this basic concept that I wrote Bombay to Bangkok as a romantic comedy."

Ghai's earlier film, 36 China Town too was shot in Thailand. In recent times, films like Kaal and Anthony Kaun Hai have been shot in Thai cities. While Kaal was billed Rs 10 million (Rs one crore) for a 10 day shooting schedule, Anthony Kaun Hai was shot for a period of 30 days for Rs 16 million (Rs 1.6 crore).

"The rates differ on the basis of the script, producer and scale of the film. Another factor that determines the rates is how well our country is projected in the film," says Thai Consulate General Jesada Chavarnbhark.
Chavarnbhark, who was present at the launch of Bombay to Bangkok says that if a documentary or commercial film is to be shot in Thailand, the relevant permissions can be obtained within one day.

Currently, the country does not offer rebates or subsidies to filmmakers, but will soon chalk out plans and rates that will make Thailand an enterprising destination for Bollywood filmmakers.

Headline: International film festival to go ahead in July

This year's Bangkok International Film Festival will go ahead in July, organisers said yesterday, dispelling rumours it had been cancelled.

The 10-day festival would open at SF CentralWorld Plaza on July 19.

However the budget had been cut to only 60 million baht, well down on last year's 180 million baht budget.

Organisers hope to showcase about 100 titles, with a team of Thai programmers responsible for film selection.

Festival director Chattan Kunjara na Ayudhya said this year's festival would be geared more towards Asian films with organisers hoping to attract a larger Thai audience than the festival had in previous years

Speedy processing intended to encourage producers to shoot more movies here

Foreign film producers are guaranteed a three-day approval period if their films to be shot in Thailand deal with non-sensitive issues, according to Tourism and Sports Minister Suvit Yodmani.

Suvit yesterday said the ministry would order the Fine Arts Department, the Forestry Department and other related bodies to grant speedy permission in order to attract more foreign films.

The Fine Arts Department and Forestry Department control many venues popular with film-makers and should be able to approve requests themselves, Suvit said.

He said department directors could grant approval to avoid the lengthier process of consulting a minister. However, permission would only be given for non-sensitive movies. "If the film is not bothering our natural sites, culture, heritage or community, we will let them proceed," said Suvit.
The Thailand Film Office will help film-makers to obtain visas and work permits and to bring in equipment from abroad.

Foreign producers have been asking the government to reduce the tax on imported equipment and to provide more benefits.

In 2006, there were 14 foreign films shot in Thailand. One still under production is "Big Hit in Bangkok", a remake of "Bangkok Dangerous" by Hong Kong twins Oxide and Danny Pang. The movie features Hollywood star Nicolas Cage and well-known Thai actors Chakrit Yamnam and Dom Haetrakoon, with an estimated production cost of Bt220 million.

Hong Kong producers have returned to Thailand after a few years of decline because of alternative locations in China.

Two films were recently completed. One is "Secret Action", directed by Yuan Sai Sang and featuring Hong Kong superstars Cheng Yee Kim, Fu Lek and Fung Stephen Gin. Another is "Protg", starring Andy Lau and filmed partly in Chiang Rai.

Although these films were each made on small budgets of Bt3 million, there was a benefit to local companies working with the Hong Kong producers.

Indian producers are increasingly looking to Thailand to shoot music videos featuring panoramic views on beautiful beaches and islands such as Koh Poda, Maya Beach and the Phi Phi islands in Krabi province.
The estimated production cost for each Indian film is about Bt5 million.
The French government has also sponsored a Bt15-million film named "Cargo". The film was shot in cargo boats along the Chao Phya River and Koh Sichung in Chon Buri province.

Foreign film production in Thailand this year will take place in Bangkok, Krabi, Phang Nga, Phuket, Kanchanaburi, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Ratchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan.

The estimated cost of all productions amounts to more than Bt500 million.

Foreign producers will spend less time getting permission to shoot films in Thailand after a one-stop service office opens some time in the next two months.

It would take one day to approve film shoots for commercials, music videos and TV shows, instead of several days to weeks currently according to Tourism and Sports Minister Suvit Yodmani.

For feature films and documentaries, which require script approval, the process would take only two weeks, he said.

The cabinet last month approved the establishment of a "one-stop service" office for international film producers working in Thailand. It hopes the office will promote investments in film production and bring in more foreign revenue.

The office, located at the Office of Tourism Development, will be run by representatives from various agencies, including the Culture Ministry, the Fine Arts Department, the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry and the Labour Ministry. Mr Suvit said he would hold talks with the agencies later this month and ask them to provide staff with full authority to make approvals.

Wanasiri Morakul, director of the Thailand Film Office, said it was not necessary to take a long time to approve music videos or commercials, as most could be produced in studios. But feature films are different as most use outdoor locations.

Activists claim that during the shooting of The Beach, in 2000 on Koh Phi Phi, the national park was damaged. The filmmaker has denied the claims.

Ms Wanasiri said revenue from foreign film production in Thailand had come mainly from advertising, music videos, documentaries and television shows. Many of them used local post-production houses.

Long feature-film shoots have been more scarce, with only two to three per year. Recently, two high-profile productions have used Thailand: Rambo IV starring Sylvester Stallone, and American Gangster starring Denzel Washington.

The statistics show revenue from foreign film shoots in 2006 was nearly two billion baht, compared with only 400 million in 1998. The amount of productions also increased to 490, from 290 in 1998.

She said the Tourism Authority of Thailand, together with the Export Promotion Department and the Board of Investment, would introduce the new one-stop service for US producers during a trade and investment promotional trip in April.

HONG KONG -- The Thai government said Tuesday it would slash bureaucracy to make Thailand a more attractive location for international film shoots. Moves, announced by the ministry of sports and tourism, however, fell short of introduction of new financial incentives.

The interim government's cabinet meeting approved the establishment of a service center that will process filming applications and issue shooting permits within 24 hours. Currently, these must be submitted to the Thailand Film Office at least 14 days before lensing. Country fears competition from neighboring Vietnam and Malaysia, which offer low-cost locations and less red tape.

Spokeswoman Natepreeya Chumchaiyo said that Thai authorities would, however, continue to monitor movie content and production practices to ensure cultural sensitivity and to protect the environment. With its rich diversity of locations ranging from tropical jungles and mountains to bustling modern cities, Thailand is one of the most favored international locations and in 2006 attracted some 400 movie, TV and music videos. However, the value of inward spend dropped to some Bt1 billion ($28 million) in 2006, compared with $39 million in 2002. Decline occurred before the September military coup and recent wave of bombings in Bangkok and the far south of the country.

With film policy in Thailand closely allied with tourism, environmental concerns run high. Twentieth Century Fox's "The Beach," which was shot in 2000 in a National Park, has been embroiled in years of court cases. In November the Supreme Court upheld an earlier ruling that the production had damaged the environment and ordered a cost study. Recent Nicolas Cage starrer "Bangkok Dangerous" shot largely in the country. Next big incoming production is expected to be Sylvester Stallone starrer "Rambo IV: In the Serpent's Eye," which will lense in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai and bring in an estimated $5 million.

Thornsiri Manoharn, who started her first term as Tourism Authority of Thailand governor last Thursday, said she was confident that the tourism industry would bounce back by 2010 and hit revenue target of $15.3 billion from foreign visitors. TAT is also the largest provider of coin for the Bangkok Film Festival, which was postponed from later this month to July.

This week there were mixed opinions about strength of local film sector from other quarters. Influential research and policy institute, Kasikorn Research Center said Monday that it expects Thai movie industry to grow by 10% in 2007 to some $154 million at retail prices. Institute pinned most of the growth on the expansion of country's theatrical exhibition sector and ever-improving facilities.

However, it warned that film is facing stiffer competition from other forms of entertainment, that movie-going is not increasing and that higher ticket prices could put off viewers. It urged hardtop operators to modernize ticketing outlets, introduce flexible pricing and, following the Dec. 31 bomb blasts, to increase security at multiplexes.

The (Royal Thai Government) Cabinet yesterday approved the establishment of a one-stop centre to promote foreign film production in Thailand.

Netpreeya Chumchaiyo, assistant government spokesman, said the centre would approve any filming proposal within 24 hours from one to two days at present. The centre is being established following declining revenue from foreign film production over the past four years.
In 2006, Thailand reaped only Bt1.04 billion, compared to Bt1.13 billion, Bt1.22 billion and Bt1.4 billion in the three preceding years.

The availability of elephants, exotic jungle and beach settings, relatively low production costs, and a mature film industry that provides a legion of experienced crew members, have made Thailand an attractive location for films.

A Still photography campaign for Killer Jeans. The apparel company is from India. The production was done in Thailand by Benetone Films. There were all together three situations. We shot in a forest about 2 hours away from Bangkok, in a pool of a really neat house and a beautiful public park in Bangkok. The concept of the campaign was fantasy with play on Angel of Death as the brand is "Killer" Jeans. All the model was cast in Bangkok by Benetone Films.

The campaign was shot in Phuket Island on an amazing Yatch. We were about an hour away from the coast in calm sea. The models were all casted from Thailand. Benetone Films was responsible for providing all the production supports for the shoot.

The logo of the company is the Bull. Therefore concept of the film is "Matador". The male model wearing the Smash Underwear was chased all over town by hot female matadors. The film was shot entirely in Bangkok. Three locations were chosen - the Race Course, a Shopping Complex and an Apartment.

Hi, we’re back again. After a long non activity of our blog, we thought we’ll try to make another go at blogging. Let me start with a quick introduction about us. We are leading Production House in Thailand catering to line production of foreign companies interested in shooting Feature Films, TV commercial, Music Videos, and Stills Photography campaign in Thailand and the region. We have experience in handling over 30 Feature Films, 60 TVCs, dozen still campaigns and quite a few music videos. Got the idea of rejuvenating this blog after test posting our TVC projects on Youtube.Com . Our channel is http://www.youtube.com/benetonefilms . What a surprise we got!!!
